Summary of the lesson “A Question of Space”

Summary of the lesson “A Question of Space”

The lesson “A Question of Space”, is written by Neera  Kashyap. The present lesson demonstrates how self observation leads to self improvement and change in attitudes. It is also psychology based lesson, which suggests us how to control our emotions.
Vikrant, the only child of successful doctor couple, who want him to become a doctor too, was a student of XI standard and his day filled with studies and more studies. His parents were constantly forcing him to study hard in order to get admission to a prestigious medical college.
One day Vikrant asked Anuj, a photo journalist whom Vikrant met in the jogging track, if he was forced by his parents into his profession. Anuj replied that he took it up out of his own choice and asked Vikrant if he was pressurized by his parents and how he reacts to the pressure. Vikrant replied that he argues with his parents and walks out. Then Anuj advised him to keep observing how his body reacts when he in upset. Vikrant, then started noticing that whenever he gets upset, his body starts clenching, mouth gets dry, his head tights at the temples. He felt it when his parents put pressure on him to join tuitions for medical entrance .Unable to bear the pressure he walked out again.
The next day Vikrant told Anuj that observing his body reactions and emotions was not helping him to solve his problem. Then Anuj gave him the most important advice. He asked him to express an emotion opposite to what he feels, said that if he was agitated, he should express as calmly as possible. Vikrant tried Anuj’s advice and found that he was able to bear the pressure much better and also noticed that his parents then willingly listened to his point of view and agreed to support him.
Thus Vikrant controlled his emotions and moods with the help of self observation. He, at the end of the class XI, enrolled for coaching classes for medical entrance exam with an awareness that he was doing the right thing. Thus self observation leads Vikrant to Self improvement.

Summary of the poem ‘The Village Schoolmaster’ by Oliver Goldsmith:
The poem ‘The Village Schoolmaster’ is written by Oliver Goldsmith. The present poem is an extract from his ‘Deserted Village’. The poem deals with effect of modernization on a small village called ‘Auburn’ and also it describes about the village schoolmaster and his special abilities and qualities.

So the poet mourning about the loss of heritage of the village. The poet remembers his Village Schoolmaster. He was lived in a big mansion and taught in a little school. Now the mansion of village schoolmaster is surrounded by fence with blossoming grass but that was useless according to the poet because no one is there to enjoy the beauty of the grass.
The Village Schoolmaster was a strict person and disciplinarian. The students were afraid of him and they had the ability to trace the morning face of the schoolmaster and to tell whether that day would bring any misfortune or not. In spite of strictness, the schoolmaster was jolly. He always used to tell jokes and all students laughed at all his jokes, even they were not funny. If they noticed any sign of anger on his face, they would spread the news throughout the classroom.
The schoolmaster was, in reality, a kind hearted person and he never hesitates to learn from his own faults. The villagers declared that the schoolmaster was a scholar of the village and he had special abilities like he could write, workout sums, survey land, forecast the time and tide(which means he could tell weather conditions of the day) and measure the content of a vessel. Schoolmaster was a master at argument, even he defeated he could argue still. The villagers wondered about schoolmaster’s deep knowledge and his thundering voice. So they always gathered around him and the most amazing thing for the villagers was that how one small head of the village schoolmaster carry all knowledge. Africa as the poem of the strength, struggle and sufferings of black people.

Africa as ‘the poem of  the strength, struggle and sufferings of black people'.
The poem Africa is written by David Diop, one of the revolutionary African poets. The  poem describes about the strength, struggle and sufferings of African black people. The poet himself is speaking about his motherland and he had firm hope in the freedom movement of black people.
In the poem the poet admires the beauty  and history of Africa (his motherland). So he says “beautiful black blood”. At the very beginning of the poem he presented an idealized image of Africa. Then follows a realistic picture of African’s experience of bitterness, despair and mockery under colonial rule.Instead of all these the poem is a powerful presentation of strength of black people. So he compares the African freedom movement to ‘a young and strong tree ‘.According to the poet African struggle is like a lonely battle but they will achieve the freedom and liberty they want no matter how bitter the taste in getting in getting it.Thus the poem is most unique poem.
